My Non-Binary Is Black

My Nonbinary Is Black is a visual storytelling project centering dark-skinned nonbinary individuals, highlighting the intersection of Blackness, gender expansiveness, and colorism. Through intimate portraiture photography, this project challenges the ways anti-Blackness and colorism shape perceptions of gender within and beyond the queer community.

Too often, representations of nonbinary identities are filtered through a white or light-skinned lens, erasing the presence and experiences of dark-skinned Black people. This project disrupts that narrative, affirming that Black nonbinary existence is vast, valid, and deeply rooted in history. By showcasing dark-skinned nonbinary people in their fullness—whether in moments of joy, reflection, or self-expression—My Nonbinary Is Black asserts that gender freedom is for all Black people, not just those who fit within palatable frameworks.

This is an ongoing series.
